Portuguese is spoken by approximately 250 million native speakers, making it the sixth most spoken language in the world by native speakers. It is the official language of nine countries: Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and PrÃncipe, East Timor, and Equatorial Guinea. Portuguese is one of the fastest-growing languages in sub-Saharan Africa and is increasingly important in international trade, particularly given Brazil's status as one of the world's largest economies and a leading agricultural and industrial nation.
Portuguese exists in two major standard varieties: Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. These differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary, and written conventions — but are mutually intelligible.
