Reading and listening are passive. You absorb input but don't practice producing it. Flashcards fix that with two principles that actually move the needle:

Active recall means your brain has to retrieve the answer instead of recognizing it. You see a prompt, you reach for the word. That struggle is the work. Every time you pull a phrase from memory and get it right, that pathway gets stronger.

Active recall alone isn't enough. You'd waste time re-reviewing stuff you already know.Spaced repetition is an algorithm that shows you a card right before you're about to forget it. Review at the right moment, retention goes up. Review too early or too late, you're either bored or relearning from scratch.
